Folders
Floe keeps your sample libraries and presets as ordinary files in ordinary folders. You choose which folders it looks in, so you can keep large libraries on an external drive, keep your own presets somewhere you back up, and organise everything with your usual file manager.
There are two separate kinds of folder: sample library folders and preset folders. Floe scans each one, including all its subfolders, and shows what it finds in the browsers. It also watches them, so anything you add, remove or change appears in Floe straight away, without a restart. Floe keeps no separate record of what's installed: whatever is in your folders is what Floe has.
You manage the folders on the Folders tab of Preferences.
Each kind of folder has its own list. The first folder in each list is Floe's default one, which is always scanned. Under each folder, Floe shows how many presets or sample libraries it contains.
- Add folder — choose a folder for Floe to scan. Pick a top-level folder, such as "Floe Libraries", rather than each library inside it, since the subfolders are scanned too. You can select several folders at once.
- Open folder — show the folder in your file manager.
- Stop scanning this folder — remove a folder you've added from the list. Nothing is deleted from your computer; Floe simply stops looking there. The default folders can't be removed.
Installing to your own folders
When you install a package, Floe puts its sample libraries and presets in the install folders chosen on the Packages tab. They start as Floe's default folders on your main drive. To install somewhere else, such as an external drive, choose a different folder from the Sample library install folder and Preset install folder menus. Each menu lists the folders Floe already scans, plus Add folder to add a new one and select it in a single step. See Installing to a different drive.
Moving your libraries or presets
For now, moving is done using your file manager (Finder, File Explorer, etc.). Floe doesn't have a 'move' button.
- Create the new folder in your file manager. For example, "Floe Libraries" on your external drive.
- Add it to Floe with Add folder on the Folders tab. Be sure to use the right list: sample libraries and presets are separate.
- Open the old folder with its button.
- Move everything across in your file manager, usually by selecting it all and dragging it, or by cutting and pasting.
Floe notices the change and updates its browsers instantly. If anything is missing, restart your DAW. To have future packages install into the new folder too, choose it as the install folder on the Packages tab.
Telling libraries and presets apart
If you lose track of which files are which:
- Sample libraries are folders, usually named like
Developer Name - Library Name. They usually contain afloe.luafile and aSamplesfolder. - Preset banks are folders, usually named like
Library Name Factory Presets. They usually contain category subfolders full of small.floe-presetfiles.
We recommend keeping libraries and presets in separate folders, but Floe copes if they're mixed: add the same folder to both lists.
Why libraries and presets are separate
Most sample libraries come with a preset bank, so it's fair to wonder why they live apart. There are a few good reasons:
- They're edited differently. Libraries are built by developers with programming tools and you rarely change them. Presets are made and changed by musicians all the time. Keeping them apart means you can save and reorganise presets freely without touching a library.
- They're different sizes. A sample library can be large, with hundreds of audio files, so it often belongs on a big external drive. Presets are tiny, easy to back up and easy to share.
- A preset bank can use several libraries. Its presets aren't tied to a single library, so they don't belong inside one.
See How Presets Are Stored for more about preset files, and File Locations for where the default folders are.
